Sports Injuries, Treatments and Medical Tourism

Sports injuries are inevitable when indulging in physically demanding or contact sports. So much so that there is an altogether separate branch of medicine dedicated to the treatment of sports injuries and is called sports medicine. While minor wounds can heal in a few days or weeks, major ones may require surgical attention. However, just like any other surgery, surgical treatment of sports injuries may be expensive in the United States and other Western countries. But thanks to medical tourism, now these treatments can be obtained for cheap.
Injuries are an inevitable part of playing any sport, be it tennis, squash, football, baseball, hockey, cycling, golf or any other. Just like defeats don’t stop an athlete from moving on, physical injuries should not prevent you from playing sports because there almost always is a way to treat the injury and even major injuries can now be treated affordably through medical tourism.
TYPES OF INJURIES
Sports injuries may range from bruises and muscle strains, to fractures and head injuries. The most common sports injuries are:
- Ligament sprains and muscle strains
- Swollen muscles
- Knee injuries (torn meniscus, runner’s knee or patellofemoral pain syndrome, jumper’s knee, articular surface problems, problems with the kneecap)
- Knee ligament injuries (torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), torn medial collateral ligament (MCL))
- Shoulder injuries (rotator cuff tears, glenoid labrum tear)
- Tendon injuries (Achilles tendon injuries, DeQuervain’s syndrome or washerwoman’s sprain or mother’s wrist)
- Pain along the shin bone (shin splints)
- Bone fractures (scaphoid fracture, hip fracture)
- Dislocations (shoulders, fingers, knees, wrists, elbows)
- Spine injuries (herniated disk, sciatica, lumbar spinal stenosis)
TREATMENT OPTIONS
To accelerate the overall healing process it’s important that the initial phase (inflammatory phase) of the injury be minimized with the initial treatments. Treatment often begins with the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) regime to relieve pain, reduce swelling and speed healing. Other possible treatments include pain relievers, keeping the injured area from moving, rehabilitation and sometimes surgery.
SURGICAL TREATMENT OF INJURIES
Surgery is recommended when the more conservative methods of healing and physical therapy have failed to relieve pain and restore normal function. Based on the site and extent of injury and evaluation by your doctor, the surgical approach used could be traditional or laparoscopic (keyhole).
The most common surgeries to treat sports-related injuries are:
- Knee replacement (total or partial)
- ACL repair or reconstruction
- Meniscectomy
- Arthroscopic surgery (knee arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy, spinal arthroscopy, wrist arthroscopy, ankle arthroscopy, hip arthroscopy)
- Tendon repair surgery
- Laminectomy or laminotomy
- Discectomy or microdiscectomy
- Bone fracture repair surgery
- Hip replacement
- Hip hemiarthroplasty
- Birmingham hip resurfacing
- Spinal decompression surgery
MEDICAL TOURISM AND SURGERY
If you are insured, your insurance may cover the cost of surgery. But if you have to pay for the surgery out of pocket it may cost you a fortune to have the surgery in the US. Therefore, Americans are increasingly shopping for surgical care in other countries – medical tourism – where the cost of surgery is much less while at the same time the quality offered is superior to what is available in the US.
When William Nilsson, an uninsured American, sustained knee injuries while playing football and tore his knee ligaments while playing golf, he resorted to an Indian hospital to get a total knee replacement surgery so he could return to his sports hobbies. Assisted by Healthbase, a medical tourism facilitator based in Boston, he managed to have his surgery for $6,500. The same surgery in the US would have cost him between $30,000 and $40,000.
Similarly, Daniel Biggs broke a tendon in his hand when playing golf. He had his tendon repair surgery coordinated by Healthbase in Panama for which he paid $5,500 – a price that was a mere 20% of what he was quoted in the United States.
These are just two examples of the hundreds and thousands of people traveling overseas to seek affordable health care for sports-related injuries as well as non-sports related conditions. Countries such as Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and India are popular medical tourism destinations for such treatments.
Price differential is the leading factor for the popularity of medical tourism. Other benefits of using medical tourism are access to high quality and immediate care. You may find more information about affordable medical tourism on the Healthbase website.

Anaphylaxis Food allergy – Its Symptoms And Treatment
Any person will never realize if he/she is allergic to a kind food unless and until they have consumed the food allergen. For the reaction to happen and create a symptom it requires a certain quantity of food.
Anaphylaxis and allergy caused by food are related closely. They do have their differences and their own definitions.
A person could develop an allergic reaction to the food which is related closely to the original allergy that he/she has. An allergy, say, to oysters could lead to allergic reactions when a person takes fish, shrimp or crabs.
A person’s immune system tends to react in 2 ways when he/she has food allergy. The body may or may not respond to the use of mast cells. The mast cells can be found in any part of the body but it is most likely to be found in eyes, skin, lungs, and throat and especially in the areas of gastrointestinal system. The other kind of response is by the releasing of immunoglobulin E by the body. These antibodies travel across the blood system. Then it causes the discharge of the chemical histamine which in turn causes the allergic reactions to activate in the body parts that were mentioned above.
Anaphylaxis is derived from the words phylaxis and ana which mean protection and back in Greek. The abrupt response for this allergy is greater in degree strength than the normal allergy that can be vital to the sufferer. Main causes for anaphylaxis are the latex which is in contact with the skin, insect stings, food anaphylaxis and medications. There may be even unknown causes.
Anaphylaxis involves the reaction, like in allergy caused by food, of different body parts. The main difference is that only a limited amount of allergen and intensity of the response is required for this reaction to happen.
Anaphylaxis could come about by the intake of skin contact, inhalation of (food) aroma, food, etc. anaphylactic shock is the type of anaphylaxis which is life threatening. Only a meager amount of allergen is required to cause death to the person within few minutes of exposure in anaphylactic shock.
People who have a bad history of allergy to asthma, eczema and food are the ones who are in danger of getting this anaphylactic reaction. These reactions are fatal creating a sense of fear. Another group of individuals who are at risk of anaphylaxis are teenagers who are affected with a certain kind of food allergy present especially in junk foods. This because of the fact that these teenagers tend to eat outside very often, are experimental and daring in their new endeavors and so they fail to find the symptoms of this dangerous reaction. To add to these woes teenagers often forget to carry important medications which is caused due to self- consciousness.
Anaphylaxis symptoms are alike to that of allergies caused by foods. The process of anaphylaxis initially gears up with an irritating or itchy sensation and few individuals experience different kinds of irritation. Anaphylactic symptoms also include sudden warm feeling, labored breathing, inflammation of the oral cavity and throat dyspnea, hot flashes, diarrhea, hives, and loss of consciousness, fainting, gastric irritations and low blood pressure.
There are several cases where symptoms fade away for quite sometime but gradually come back in 2 to 3 hours. This is called biphasic reaction.
To prevent or avoid anaphylactic reactions and food allergy diet modifications, proper scrutiny of food labels, specific instructions in orders taken in restaurants and certain type of medications could help you in minimizing the reaction that takes place. Moreover, Consultation of the physician is very important and advisable for carrying out an efficient and systematic management plan. This allergy can also be caused by hereditary genes.

What kind of pet food is healthier to feed your cat, dry food or canned food?
We have been feeding our new cat canned food because that is what the shelter said she preffered. However, we just got back from the vet and learned she has gingivitis. I have also heard that most canned food is essentially the same thing as giving your pets junk food or candy. What’s the answer?
Actually feeding both is best. The vet I worked at fed a little canned food and free fed dry through out the day…. Canned food is not like candy. It is high in meat content and is good for them, but they need the dry to clean their teeth. Hope that helps!

The Gift of Sports Apparel Will Help You Score Big This Christmas
Christmas is coming, and that means it’s time to start going through your written and mental Christmas lists to see who wants what for this holiday season. For girls, items like Polly Pocket, Barbie and all things Hannah Montana are a must. For the boys, legos, K’nex and character toys have never lost their appeal. But for the big boys and girls, and even the kids who are very much interested in sports, there’s only one thing to look for when it comes to picking out Christmas presents: sports apparel.
The great thing about sports apparel is that most apparel items are equal opportunity. There is no discrimination based on size, age or even gender. You’ll find articles of sports-related clothing that is perfect for newborn babies, just as you’ll find t-shirts and long-sleeved shirts that will be great for a child of school age. For adults, both men and women, sports apparel in the form of NFL jerseys or even NBA jerseys is always the perfect gift.
You know what else is great about sports apparel? It’s always available. You can shop for it any time of the year, at stores, online, even directly from stadiums and those sports teams that have fundraisers and run their own online websites and shops.
If you plan on shopping for sports apparel, keep the following tips in mind:
First, consider the person you are buying for. Know their preferred team! There’s no point in buying them NFL jerseys that depict the Philadelphia Eagles if their Pennsylvania team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Also, know their size. If you’re unsure, guess, and buy a size large. It’s always better to go too big than too small. Kids will eventually grow into larger clothing sizes, and adults can wear layers, or just have a baggy shirt that is comfortable to lounge about in.
Second, try and shop in between seasons. Common sense dictates that if it’s the height of the football season, then you’re going to pay top dollar for any sports apparel related to football. In addition to shopping in between season, hit up the offline and online sale and clearance racks to see what kind of interesting finds there may be to have.
Third and finally, shop around. Don’t purchase sports apparel from the first company you come across. You may be able to find a better deal, or simply a better quality material, at another store or online website.

Allergy-free Dog Food – Best Ways To Deal With Your Dog’s Food Allergy
After a hard days work, it’s definitely refreshing to play with your pet dog. For many of us, they are part of our family and we love dogs as much as we love our family members. Like how feel sad when our children or spouse or any other family member feel ill, we have the same feeling towards our dog too when it is ill. Am I right? The worst part is that many times we do not the reason for it to become ill. When we take it to the vet, he would say the ailment is due to food allergy.
You would definitely be worried if you hear that the illness is due to the food that your dog eats. One symptom through which you can identify food allergies in dogs is excessive scractching due to itching. If you closely watch, you can understand that main food items that cause allergy would be corn, soy, wheat, beef, chicken, etc. Don’t ever waste time if you feel your dog is not well. Immediately take it to the vet for diagnose and treatment.
Few symptoms of food allergy in dogs include itching, scratching, licking the foot, biting or chewing his body parts. You may introduce lamb as a subsititute for proteins.
Normally, vets give hypo-allergenic formulas to treat food allergies in dogs and these forumals are quite expensive. The fact is that it is possible to understand food allergies in dogs without even going to the vet. Anti-allergy dog foods are in market, which you may give them to your best friend, dogs. Start giving these allergy-free food items. Lots of nutrients are avialable in these food mixes and are formulated especially for dogs.
You get two variant of dog mixes, one is chicken-based and the other fish protein. Experiment with various food items that are protein rich. Observe keenly and check for the reaction. You can finally understand which food mix your dog likes and at the same time not allergic to it. Stick to this food mix.
Few points to ponder when introducing new food mixes to your pet dog:
a) You should give it for at least six days continuously.
b) Ratio should be 4:1, that is, 4 parts of old food : 1 part of new food
c) Slowly increase this proportion for six days. Once you have started to give the new food mix completely, stick to it for a minimum of seven days.
d) Check for any allergic reaction before you take a call on whether to stick to old food mix or the new one.
It is impossible to solve food allergy at once. Start giving a neutral food. Ensure that it is grain-free. Once you find the protein that is right for your pet, introduce grain to the diet. Check for the reaction. It is definitely possible to save huge amount of money if you start to experiment things by yourself. Like how we require nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc., dogs too require a balanaced diet.
You might have two pet dogs in your home, may be even same breed. However, it doesn’t mean that food habits should be similar for both of your pets. One pet may be allergic to certain kind of food mix; however, the same food mix may do good for the other pet. Do not jump into conclusions if a particular food is allergic for one pet, it will be the same for other too.
Once you understand the symptoms, it will definitely be easy for you to know what has to be done to resolve the problem.
Take good care of your pet…all the best!
